Liebherr Crawler Crane Track Shoe Replacement Guide

Oct 30,2026

We recently documented the complete process of replacing track shoes on a Liebherr LR11350 crawler crane at a client’s site in Vietnam. The on-site photographs show both the worn-out track shoes and the newly installed EG track shoes, providing a practical example of track shoe replacement and undercarriage maintenance.
Regular inspections help identify damage early. Before replacing track shoes, pay close attention to the following areas:
Track Shoes:
Check for excessive thinning, cracks, bending, or damage caused by impacts. Such defects can compromise structural strength.
Track Shoe Lugs (Grousers):
Inspect the height, corners, and edges of the lugs for excessive wear. Operating on abrasive ground or frequent turning can accelerate wear and reduce traction.
Mounting Holes and Connection Points:
Examine bolt holes, threads, and contact surfaces for wear or deformation. Also, check for any loose or damaged fasteners.
Rust and Corrosion:
Look for rust, particularly around the edges and mounting holes. Deep pitting or significant material loss can affect structural integrity and warrants further investigation.
Key Steps for Track Shoe Replacement:
Replacing track shoes on large crawler cranes requires trained personnel, appropriate lifting equipment, and strict adherence to the manufacturer’s specific maintenance procedures.
Step 1: Prepare the Crane and Work Area
Park the crane on firm, level ground. Follow the manufacturer’s shutdown and lockout/tagout procedures to secure the machine and prevent accidental movement.
Step 2: Remove Worn Track Shoes
Follow the manufacturer’s procedures to remove mounting bolts or disconnect the relevant track components. Ensure heavy components are properly supported; never work beneath track components that are not adequately secured.
Step 3: Inspect Track Links and Mounting Surfaces
Once the old track shoes have been removed, clean the contact surfaces and inspect the track links, bolt holes, threads, and mounting hardware for signs of wear or cracking. Replacing track shoes without inspecting these connecting components may leave underlying issues unaddressed.
Step 4: Install New EG Track Shoes
Ensure that the replacement track shoes match the required model, dimensions, hole patterns, and mounting specifications. Install the track shoes correctly, and tighten the fasteners following the manufacturer’s specified tightening sequence and torque values.
Step 5: Perform Final Inspection
Verify that the track shoes are properly aligned and securely fastened. Reassemble the track system and adjust the track tension. Conduct the functional checks as prescribed in the maintenance manual.
How EG Track Shoes Enhance Wear Resistance?

1. Material Selection:

Appropriate steel grades are selected based on product specifications and application requirements; elements such as Si, Ni, Cr, Mn, and Mo may be added to improve strength, toughness, and wear resistance.

2. Quenching and Tempering:

Heat treatment helps achieve the desired mechanical properties throughout the component, enhancing its ability to withstand repetitive loading and impact.

3. Surface Hardening:

Applying additional hardening to specific working surfaces improves wear resistance, particularly in areas subject to continuous ground contact. This process must be carefully controlled to balance surface hardness with the necessary toughness in the underlying material.

4. Dimensional Accuracy and Quality Control:

Manufacturing in accordance with original blueprints ensures precise dimensions and mounting hole locations, which guarantees a proper fit and effective load transfer between the track shoes and the track links.

These measures address various aspects of track shoe performance. Actual service life will vary depending on ground conditions, crane operating habits, and maintenance status.

Practical Maintenance Tips for Extending Service Life
1. Regular inspections and proper operating habits help extend the service life of track shoes.
2. Periodically inspect the track shoe grouser height, plate thickness, edges, and mounting areas.
3. Check for loose bolts, cracks, deformation, or uneven wear.
4. Avoid unnecessary sharp turns and minimize excessive travel over abrasive ground surfaces.
5. Keep the undercarriage clean and adjust the track tension according to the manufacturer’s specifications. When investigating abnormal wear, it is essential to also inspect related undercarriage components, including track links, track rollers, idlers, and drive sprockets.
6. Replacing worn track pads at the appropriate time—while simultaneously checking associated components—helps minimize unnecessary downtime and ensures the reliable operation of your crawler crane.
In this recent replacement project for a Liebherr LR11350 crane, EG track pads were put into service under actual operating conditions.
