Why Wider Track Shoes Are Not Always Better for Crawler Cranes

The main function of a track shoe is to provide contact with the ground and transfer the machine’s load through the crawler system. A wider track shoe increases the contact area, which can help distribute the crane’s weight over a larger area and reduce average ground pressure.
This can be useful when a heavy crawler crane is working on soft or low-bearing-capacity ground.
However, increasing the width also changes how the track shoe and crawler system are loaded. A wider shoe can experience greater bending and lateral forces, particularly when the crane is operating on uneven or hard ground. It may also affect traction, component stress and wear.
