Why are tracks used instead of wheels?

Crawler cranes use tracks instead of wheels mainly because tracks offer several advantages over wheels:
1. Greater stability:
Weight distribution: Tracks distribute the weight of the crane over a larger surface area, which reduces ground pressure and prevents the crane from sinking into soft or uneven ground. This is essential for stability on construction sites with varying soil conditions.
Lower ground pressure: Tracks have a larger contact area than wheels, minimizing ground pressure, making them suitable for working on soft or loose terrain that wheeled cranes may struggle to handle.
2. Maneuverability on rough terrain:
Traction: Tracks provide better traction on uneven or slippery surfaces, allowing crawler cranes to negotiate obstacles and rough terrain more effectively than wheeled cranes.
Ability to negotiate obstacles: Tracks can more easily handle obstacles such as rocks and debris because they grip the ground better and can handle irregularities in the terrain.
3. Carrying capacity:
Heavy loads: Crawler cranes are designed to lift and support extremely heavy loads. The ability of the track system to distribute weight helps maintain balance and prevent tipping, especially when lifting heavy or off-center loads.
4. Reduced Ground Damage:
Minimize impact: Tracks cause less disturbance and damage to the ground, while wheels create rutting and wear the ground.
5. Versatility and adaptability:
Terrain adaptability: Tracks can adapt to a variety of ground, including soft ground, sand and gravel, making them suitable for different work sites. Wheels are less efficient on such ground and may get stuck or cause stability issues.
