What should we do for crawler cranes in the face of thunderstorms?
“It was fine just now. After a thunderstorm, the crane’s computer display was out of whack.”
This type of feedback is often received during a thunderstorm season, usually when a crane is struck by lightning.
Lightning has an average current of 30 kilobits, a maximum current of 300 kilobits, and a voltage of about 100 to 1 billion volts, enough to cause the electronic components to break down and damage multiple controllers and sensors. Even if installed with a surge protector, cannot fully ensure the safety of the equipment in thunderstorm weather.

1. Lower the overall height
Crane jib is high, especially in the open place, the vertical boom is like the Earth’s electric needle, very easy to attract lightning, so the boom lying on the ground or lying down to the lowest permitted conditions, reduce the probability of being directly struck by lightning.
2. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the main power switch
Let the vehicle engine flame out and turn off the power switch, which can cut off the power of all electrical components of the vehicle, to avoid the formation of a loop.
3. Unplug the controller
UNPLUG the controller, you can physically isolate the controller and other critical electrical components from the electrical system, to prevent large current and voltage through, protect the controller.
4. Lightning proof grounding
Installation of a lightning protection grounding device can keep the crawler crane well grounded. When the high voltage formed by lightning is superimposed on the crawler crane body, the grounding system can quickly release the voltage higher than the safe working voltage of the control system, keep the whole car is an equal potential body, will not cause local high voltage and damage control system components.
The above measures can reduce the probability of equipment damage caused by lightning, but cannot completely avoid the occurrence of electrical damage caused by lightning (especially by direct lightning).
